"As our country's flag signifies purity, valor, and justice, may we as true Kiwanians exemplify those virtues as we serve the children of the world."

All About Us
Kiwanis was founded in 1915 with the vision of serving the children of the world. And it has. In the nearly 100 years since its founding, Kiwanis is now located in over 80 countries around the world with over 8,000 adult clubs and over 7,000 youth clubs. Together, they provide over 150,000 service projects a year, raise more that $100 million a year, and devote over 6 million hours of service with over 500,000 members, youth and adult. Kiwanis sponsors Service Leadership Programs, or SLP's for youth of all ages. K-Kids is for elementary school aged kids, Builders Club for middle school kids, and Key Club for high school kids. There is also Circle K (or CKI) for collegiates and Aktion Club for adults with disabilities.
Currently, Kiwanis International is working with UNICEF on The Eliminate Project. The goal of this project is to eliminate maternal/neo-natal tetanus (MNT) around the globe. This is a huge problem in that in dozens of countries around the globe, their living conditions create an environment that promotes the growth of tetanus. When infected with tetanus, the infant lives in excruciating agony where they are unable to tolerate touch, sound, or light, and they die within a matter of days. There exists a series of three vaccines that can provide immunity to the mother and, in turn, all of her future children so that none of them have to have this fate. And it only costs a person $1.80 to be vaccinated. In 2010 when the project was started, there were 59 countries all afflicted with MNT. In the following four years, we have managed to eliminate it from 35 countries, leaving only 24 left.
The La Cueva Kiwanis Club was founded in 2002. While every club is different from one another, ours was created with the idea of serving our own SLP: the La Cueva High School Key Club. We work closely with the Key Club in all of their own projects and help provide them with guidance so that they can be their own club, promoting growth and leadership capabilities in its members. We also work to provide scholarships to the students and provide adult supervision for their projects. We also work to sponsor students to be able to attend events like Key Leader (a weekend camp to promote leadership abilities in high school students) and the Southwest District Convention, or D-Con (a weekend where delegates from all the Key Clubs in our district come together for exchanging ideas, discussing their clubs, vote on district positions, and take leadership building classes).
We do pay dues (most of which are fees to Kiwanis International and Southwest District), but they do cover various activity fees and insurance for our club. We try to keep them as low as possible. Another thing to keep in mind is that, because we work so highly with the Key Club (children under 18), we are required to do background checks. You can get information for why we do the checks and how to get one here. In order to supervise at events like Key Leader and District Convention, you are required to get this check done. Also, we run background checks through Albuquerque Public Schools in order to help them with their general projects. You can find that check here. Both of these run for under $20. Depending on what kind of projects you would be interested in helping with would depend on what check you should get. Feel free to contact us should you have any questions.
